ACA could raise premiums for 65% of small firms

Posted online
A majority of small businesses that offer health insurance could see premiums rise, according to a new government report.

The report from the actuary for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reports 65 percent of small firms would likely incur higher premiums this year under the Affordable Care Act.

As of Jan. 1, insurers can't charge different premiums based on health status, gender and health care usage. The CMS report expects this to push up insurance costs for many small firms, since younger and healthier individuals can no longer expect lower premiums. But it will also make health insurance more affordable for older and sicker workers.
