AARP, Carnahan join for safe-investing program

Posted online
Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has joined the AARP Foundation and Investor Protection Trust to help older Americans avoid financial fraud and marketplace abuse.

A new program, “The Campaign for Wise and Safe Investing,” is being offered in nine Missouri cities, including Springfield.

The program is funded by the AARP Foundation, AARP’s Missouri office and an IPT grant. It is offered under the umbrella of AARP Missouri’s Consumer University. Other cities in the program are Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia, Kirksville, Rolla, Poplar Bluff, Kennett and Cape Girardeau.

“We’re hoping to reach out and enhance financial literacy as well as share safeguards against other types of fraud,” said John McDonald, director of AARP Missouri, in a news release.

The program will address retirement security issues, McDonald added. Carnahan’s involvement entails education about consumer fraud and identity theft prevention.

“Missouri seniors need to be on the lookout for scams and financial recommendations that may not be in their best interest,” Carnahan said in the release.

During the next six months, Consumer University classes will be held in each of the nine cities, according to an AARP news release.

While specific dates were not available, the classes are to be held on Saturdays so that those individuals older than 50 who are still in the work force will be able to attend.[[In-content Ad]]
