A small Japanese island has disappeared

A tiny island off the coast of the Japanese village of Sarufutsu has disappeared.

When a survey was last conducted three decades ago, the island was about 1.4 meters above sea level, according to Japan’s coast guard.

Japanese officials called the rock Esanbe Hanakita Kojima four years ago. It’s part of 158 uninhabited islands that Japan has named.
