Incentives Abound in Family Atmosphere
Hy-Vee isn’t joking around when it comes to incentivizing employees to keep them happy, healthy and loyal. The employee-owned grocery chain currently operates nearly 300 stores in the Midwest and southern U.S, with two stores in Springfield. With the introduction of its Greatest Place to Work in America Initiative, the company offers numerous perks and discounts for employees. The initiative includes several benefits that employees can use every day and then, at designated times throughout the year, there are perks and benefits that are offered on a limited-time basis.
“We take care of our customers, and we take care of our employees as well,” said Hy-Vee Springfield Store #1 Director Joe Stupka. “They go hand in hand. The best place to work is going to be the best place to shop.”

Perks
Greatest Place to Work in America perks that are always available to employees include:
A Hy-Vee Plus premium membership (valued at $99 per year) which includes Fuel Saver rewards, free grocery delivery and online pickup, free monthly items and exclusive discounts
10% discount on groceries
20% discount at Hy-Vee owned restaurants
Weekly paychecks
401(k) plan with matching contribution
Holiday pay
Insurance coverage for part-time employees
Free Doctor on Demand telehealth visits
10% discount at RedBoxRx.com pharmacy
Exclusive discounts on items like childcare, electronics and cell phone plans at PerkSpot.com
Some examples of the limited time perks have included free meals on the weekend for those employees who work weekends and discounts at any DSW inside a Hy-Vee.

Career Advancement and Tuition Assistance
Hy-Vee also offers career development through Hy-Vee University and the Aisles of Opportunity program. These programs allow employees to explore working in other areas of stores and a program for advanced associates looking at the possibility of becoming a store manager. In 2020, Hy-Vee partnered with DesMoines, Iowa based Bellevue University to offer $10,500 in annual tuition assistance to employees. In addition, immediate family members of Hy-Vee employees can receive up to $2,500 in yearly tuition assistance from Hy-Vee.
“Retail is a fast-paced business with lots of different variables,” said Stupka. “We maintain a family atmosphere and support each other during the tough times. We want to make sure that everyone, customers and employees alike, know their importance and how much we appreciate them.”
