A century of hot dog production comes to an end in Madison, Wis.

Posted online
Kraft Heinz Co. announced Thursday it would shutter the Oscar Mayer plant in Madison, Wis., after 96 years in operation.

Originally transplanted north from Chicago in 1955, Oscar Mayer’s headquarters will now return to the Windy City. Oscar Mayer continued to be family owned and operated until 1981, when General Foods Corp. purchased it.

News of the closure comes roughly four months after Kraft Foods and Heinz merged to form the Pittsburgh-based global food company. Kraft purchased Oscar Meyer in 1989.

Although the brand and its signature offering will remain on store shelves – Americans eat nearly 1 billion packages of hot dogs each year – the closure will see 2,600 jobs eliminated as part of a $1.5 billion cost-cutting plan scheduled to occur over the next two years.
