'60 Minutes' veteran Morley Safer dies at 84

Following a 61-year journalism career, Morley Safer of CBS’ “60 Minutes” died yesterday at his home in New York. Safer, who had been in declining health, was 84.

Last week, Safer announced his retirement from the program after serving as a a correspondent for 46 years.

A 12-time Emmy Award recipient, Safer is credited with helping to change attitudes about the Vietnam War shortly after opening CBS’ Saigon bureau in 1965 and producing an expose that featured American soldiers burning Vietnamese huts that aired on “The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite.”
