More than 8,000 Starbucks stores will shutter this afternoon for a four-hour anti-bias training seminar for some 175,000 baristas.
The drastic measures come in the wake of an incident in Philadelphia that challenged fundamental parts of the company's values.
The curriculum reportedly features videos from Starbucks executives, rapper Common, and members from the Perception Institute as well as a documentary. Analysts say the coffee company must stress that social awareness is as important as brewing the perfect cup of coffee and address white privilege, among other key pieces of the training.
