Given entrepreneurs have created 8 million U.S. jobs in the past 25 years, they must be doing something right.
But as risk takers, there are always pitfalls to avoid – some new, some old. Here are five from the Kansas City Business Journal and tips from Sage Small Business Solutions:
1. Hiring the wrong employee. Tip: Ask interview questions that reveal intangible traits, such as passion, flexibility and adaptability.
2. Lacking a leadership voice. Tip: Identify a mentor or appoint a board of advisers.
3. Lacking influence. Tip: Do your industry homework and get in the trenches with staff.
4. Disregarding technology. Tip: No easy way to put it: Just do the research for working knowledge in your field; technology’s not going away, so don’t let it pass you by.
5. Allowing your business to manage your time. Tip: It starts with defining your objectives, then you can cut away from there.
