4-star general speaks on Iraq war

Gen. Barry McCaffrey, a national security analyst for NBC News and retired four-star general, will speak tonight at Missouri State University.

McCaffrey will give his views on the United States’ involvement in Iraq and an update on the war on terrorism at 7 p.m. in the Robert W. Plaster Student Union Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

McCaffrey also is the president of a consulting firm in Virginia, a columnist for Armed Forces Journal and an adjunct professor of international affairs at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

He has served as the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command, an assistant to Gen. Colin Powell and adviser to the secretary of state and the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

His active duty included 13 years overseas and four combat tours, as well as his command of the 24th Infantry Division during the Desert Storm 400-kilometer left-hook attack into Iraq. He received the Distinguished Service Cross twice, two Silver Stars and three Purple Hearts.

Parking for the event is available near the theater in lots 12, 13 and 29 on the corner of National Avenue and Monroe Street.
