A Minneapolis developer wants to renovate the historic Scarritt Building on Grand Boulevard in Kansas City into 109 affordable loft-style apartments for independent artists, according to the Kansas City Star.
The Municipal Art Commission in Kansas City has thrown its support behind the plans, which include seeking state and federal housing tax credits for the $21.7 million renovation.
According to one Kansas City real estate source, affordable housing for artists looking to live in the Crossroads Art District in the city is hard to come by. The Kansas City Star reports a future phase of the plans include transforming a companion building into an art gallery.
