2026 Business Leaders of the Year: Justyn Pippins

Multicultural Business Association

Justyn Pippins, a leader with the Multicultural Business Association, says some of the most important work happening in Springfield takes places behind the scenes.

“I enjoy connecting people, celebrating successes and shining a light on the good work happening across our city,” he says. “I’ve always rooted for the little guy, and I believe leadership means using your platform to elevate others and help our entire community move forward.”

Pippins, a board member for the association, says he is proud of the tangible investment that has occurred in small businesses owned by Black and Indigenous individuals and other people of color.

He says the resources are creating opportunities for entrepreneurs who have historically faced barriers to funding and support.

Pippins has built his career on community engagement and leadership. He has experience in administration and operations. His bachelor’s degree was from Indiana State University and his master’s degree – also in communication and media studies – was from Butler University.

“Through collaboration between community organizations, local institutions and business leaders, ASCEND grant has helped provide not just financial assistance, but visibility, encouragement and long-term support for diverse business owners in our community,” he says.

ASCEND is an acronym that stands for Advancing Springfield’s Commitment to Entrepreneurship, Networking and Development, according to past Springfield Business Journal coverage. The initiative was created by U.S. Bank, Downtown Springfield Association and the Efactory.

Pippins’ leadership style was influenced by an encounter with Stedman Graham in 2019.

“His message that you must first lead yourself before you can effectively lead others really stuck with me,” he says. “Since then, I’ve focused on leading with self-awareness, integrity and a commitment to continuous growth. I believe good leadership is about supporting others, helping them recognize their strengths and creating opportunities for them to succeed.”

Pippins says his “cheat code for leadership” is to surround himself with people who are smarter, in different ways.

“I learn from them, trust their expertise and believe the best outcomes happen when everyone brings their strengths to the table,” he says.

Volunteer work remains a priority for Pippins, who has served as a board member of the Drew Lewis Foundation, the Springfield-Greene County Library Foundation and QPS Bio-Kinetic.

He was also a member of the advisory councils for the Greene County American Rescue Plan funding and Greene County CARES Act Relief Fund.

“I demonstrate leadership by showing up and supporting organizations that are making a difference in our community, especially those that may not always receive the recognition they deserve,” he says.
