Having been a prosecutor and now a criminal defense attorney, Matt Russell’s role is deeply rooted in both his comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system as well as in the personal care of each of his clients.
“Facing criminal charges can be overwhelming and stressful,” says Russell. “I offer my clients not just legal support but also emotional reassurance, helping them stay calm and focused throughout the process.
“In essence, my role is to blend legal acumen with compassionate support, ensuring my clients feel empowered and well-represented during one of the most challenging times of their lives.”
Russell says that as both an attorney and a small-business owner, he understands the wrenching emotional and financial implications of criminal charges. He says by providing strategic legal counsel, he can help mitigate the risks associated with criminal proceedings, ensuring his clients’ businesses remain stable and secure.
“Legal issues can be incredibly disruptive,” says Russell. “I work diligently to resolve cases efficiently, minimizing the impact on daily business operations. My goal is to ensure that my clients can continue running their businesses with as little interruption as possible.”
Before becoming a criminal defense attorney, Russell worked for a decade as a Greene County prosecutor.
In that role, he says that when he saw people in court, he saw people in desperate need of help. He decided the best way to provide that help was by becoming a criminal defense attorney.
“I believe in addressing the whole person, not just their legal problems,” he says. “For instance, if a client’s legal troubles stem from addiction, I don’t just fight the charges – I connect them with addiction and recovery programs, or counseling services. By addressing the root causes of their legal issues and providing comprehensive support, I help them achieve not just legal victories but also personal and professional growth. This holistic, empathetic approach ensures they are better equipped to move forward positively in their lives.”
Russell is a voracious reader who attends conferences and gets continual training to stay updated on new laws, legal reforms and new policies. He sees in his profession a shift toward more client-centric legal services, focusing on transparency, communication and personalized care.
Crista Hogan, executive director of the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association, says Russell’s community engagement sets him apart from others.
“Matt is engaged in the community – most conspicuously as the very successful former mayor of Republic,” Hogan says. “But if you look at his resume, he has been stepping up and doing his part for decades. He clearly cares about others.”
