A chess tournament organized by St. Louis businessman and philanthropist Rex Sinquefield has attracted the world’s top nine players, making it the highest-rated tournament in the history of chess, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.
Called Grandmasters, the top chess players are competing Aug. 27–Sept. 7 for a $100,000 grand prize in a $315,000 prize pool.
Sinquefield’s involvement and investments in the game has made St. Louis a chess Mecca. He created the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis – the site of the annual Sinquefield Cup tournament – and in 2011, the World Chess Hall of Fame opened in St. Louis.
U.S. Chess Champs is covering the event closely online, including live play and commentary.
