12-month Goals:1. Create a new expanded interactive History Museum destination for the Springfield community and state, national and international visitors. 2. Use innovative technology to explore, preserve and present our history and the foundations of Springfield and Greene County. 3. Engage citizens and community guests by offering high-tech, hands-on history for kids, historical walking tours, costumed reenactments and local history experiences in the historic Fox Theatre. 4. Attract exciting traveling exhibits from across our nation. 5. Develop an expanded flex space allowing us to share significant items from our archival and dimensional collections. 6. Provide unique community venues available for special event rental. 7. Launch the capital campaign for the History Museum on the Square Project. 8. Move into Phase 1 of the Museum project: The Historic Barth’s building. 9. Hire additional museum staff.
Annual Events:Sunday at the Museum Exhibit Openings. Annual History Themed Fundraiser- Moon over the Mother Road (2013). Labor Day Run for History – 5K and ½ Marathon. Haunted History Bus Tours. Museum Membership Drive
How People and Businesses Can Help:Join a team of Visionaries... The expanded museum space will allow visitors to explore the past using interactive learning features and our staff will be able to preserve and exhibit more of our fine archival and artifact collections. When you donate to the museum, purchase memberships, sponsor an exhibit, or support our History Museum on the Square fundraisers, you are helping us create the future history museum that Springfield deserves.
Volunteer Opportunities:We offer community volunteers the chance to train as docents and exhibit hosts. As our museum expands, additional volunteer opportunities will be offered. We also have college interns who receive college credit for extensive volunteer work at our museum.
Testimonial:“The History Museum on the Square is literally and figuratively located at the heart of our community, and it will help to anchor our downtown redevelopment efforts. By providing a much-needed cultural amenity, the History Museum on the Square enhances Springfield’s economy and our quality of life offerings, which attract people and businesses to our community.”
