Greene County Assessor Rick Kessinger mailed out 2009 personal property and business assessment lists to taxpayers Monday.
Most taxpayers who filled out personal property assessments last year will receive assessment lists preprinted with their 2008 details, according to a county news release. Business assessment lists, however, are not preprinted with information from 2008.
"If you own the same personal property as last year, all you need to do is carefully review the information, then sign and return the list," Kessinger said in the release.
Personal property that does not appear on the list, such as a new car purchased in 2008, should be added to the list, and items no longer owned by individuals should be crossed off of the list, according to the release.
Assessment lists are the basis for the 2009 personal and business property tax bills, which county residents and business owners receive in November.
Both personal property and business assessment lists must be returned to the assessor's office no later than March 1 to avoid penalties, which range from $10 to $100, depending on assessed value.
Residents and business owners who have not received an assessment list by Jan. 31 should call the Greene County Assessor's Office at (417) 868-4195 or (417) 868-4101, or visit the Historic Greene County Courthouse, 940 Boonville Ave., Room 37.
According to the release, the assessor's phones are typically busy during the first two weeks of January, and callers may wish to try contacting the office later in the month.
