On-site yoga classes, a Weight Watchers program, and laundry and dry cleaning services are just some of the perks employees of American National Property and Casualty Co. can enjoy every day.
"It's really a family-type environment," says Western Claims Director Karl Quinn, who has worked for ANPAC for more than 20 years.
"Morale is really up here because management took a proactive approach to the economy and we didn't have to have any layoffs or cuts like other companies."
Forbes magazine named ANPAC among its 100 Most Trustworthy Companies for 2009. The private company insures everything from homes to automobiles, boats, recreational vehicles and classic cars.
Incorporated in 1973, ANPAC is a subsidiary of Galveston, Texas-based American National Insurance Co. ANPAC is rated A (excellent) by A.M. Best Co., and AA- (very strong) by Standard & Poor's, according to www.anpac.com.
The company also has received the Missouri Quality Award, based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program's management philosophy.
ANPAC's employee benefits package offers a preferred provider organization plan for all full-time and some eligible part-time employees, with the company paying 70 percent of premiums.
The company's benefits plan also includes term life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance at no charge to employees. Other types of coverage - dental, vision, health savings and flexible spending accounts - also are available. Employees who don't use their sick time can take advantage of a $200 attendance award from the company.
ANPAC's defined benefit pension plan is available to employees after one year of service, and the company pays 100 percent of this plan.
"There is no investment risk for the employee because the investment is the responsibility of the company," says Kristee Buff, assistant vice president of human resources.
In addition, ANPAC offers a 401(k) plan, in which employees are eligible to participate immediately.
"This provides an opportunity for employees to supplement their retirement and defer a percentage of their compensation each year," Buff says.
In terms of corporate culture, ANPAC offers several social opportunities for staff members, including an annual picnic and holiday gala, both planned by employees.
There also are contests and celebrations for employee and company milestones throughout the year.
There's also plenty of chances for ANPAC staff members to get involved in the community, as ANPAC encourages volunteerism.
Employees participate in Relay for Life, and they have a Multiple Sclerosis Walk Team the ANPAC Car Show for Kids helps United Way, Buff says.
One of ANPAC's most popular benefits, however, is its education assistance program. Instead of reimbursing a percentage of class costs after each semester like many companies do, ANPAC pays 100 percent up-front.
