From the beginning of his engineering career, Paul Engel has measured his success not by personal accomplishments but through the ways he positively influences others.
Engel credits an early professional mentor and fellow engineer for instilling this approach to leadership.
"I have directly trained my staff to be community-minded, professional in all their dealings and to put the welfare of others ahead of their own success," says Engel, vice president of Springfield-based Anderson Engineering Inc. "As a result, they are successful and valued members of their professional and personal communities."
Engel received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from California State University-Sacramento in 1995 and earned his Missouri professional engineer license in 2000.
In 2008, Engel was named to the board of directors at Anderson Engineering and a trustee of the company's employee stock ownership plan. As a trustee, Engel is responsible for the operation, management, investment and distribution of the ESOP trust. The employee-owned company also has an office in Joplin and is licensed in 26 states.
Engel is a registered professional engineer in Missouri, California, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana and Wyoming. Representative projects include 1,000 O'Reilly Auto Parts stores in 26 states, the Cox North emergency room entrance and various sites for Springfield Public Schools.
This year, Engel was named vice president with responsibility for daily operations of the engineering department.
"As I am currently responsible for managing and leading a group of five civil engineers of varied experience, I demonstrate leadership every day by solving my clients' challenges in a manner that encourages good ethical and moral decisions and promotes my staff" he says.
He counts his marriage to wife Machell and the birth of their daughter, Elisabeth, as his proudest personal accomplishments. He shows his support for his daughter as an officer in McBride Elementary's Parent Teacher Association.
Acquiring his professional engineering registration is Engel's proudest professional accomplishment, and he takes seriously his role in promoting ethics and morals in his industry.
Engel served for five years on the Battlefield
Planning & Zoning Commission, and he actively supports the Pregnancy Care Center in Springfield.
Engel also has served as treasurer, secretary, vice chairman and chairman for the local Professional Engineers in Private Practice.
