2009 40 Under 40 Honoree: David Anderson

Posted online
Dr. David Anderson stands at the frontier of modern medicine in the Ozarks.

As a board-certified specialist in adult and pediatric urology, he is trained in minimally invasive surgical techniques and has a keen interest in robotic surgery. Anderson, along with a group of other physicians, has developed the Center for Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Ferrell-Duncan Clinic.

"As a physician and surgeon, I feel I demonstrate leadership in most of my everyday responsibilities," he says.

"But beyond being the leader in the clinic or the operating room, I have made an effort to be constantly and consistently bringing state-of-the-art medicine to the Springfield area."

In 2005, Anderson introduced the Greenlight laser, a minimally invasive surgical alternative for treating symptoms related to an enlarged prostate. In 2006, he pioneered the Interstim program at CoxHealth, which uses surgically implanted nerve stimulators to treat patients with overactive bladder syndrome and urinary incontinence.

Just last year, Anderson was instrumental in bringing robotic surgical technology to southwest Missouri with the daVinci Robotic Surgical System.

"I have been able to educate nurses, surgical technicians as well as my fellow physicians on the advantages of robotic surgery," he says.

Anderson performed the first laparoscopic robotic-assisted prostatectomy and nephrectomy in Springfield in 2008 using the daVinci system. He has also established a team of nurses and surgical technicians specially trained in robotics.

"When we started this process early last year, there was very little support not only from the administration at CoxHealth, but also from the physicians around me," Anderson says. "But through persistence and education, I was able to clearly show them the advantages both from the hospital and physicians, but more importantly for the patients."

Anderson is active in the community, serving on the board of directors of New Covenant Academy.

"I have assisted in developing a marketing strategy for the school, as well as encouraged (school leaders) to enhance their development office," Anderson says.

"I am convinced that this school has the capability of further developing the next generation of students for this community that have not only business and technical skills, but also a strong faith to become ethical and honorable leaders."

He also speaks to area civic groups about cutting-edge medicine. Anderson also enjoys spending time with his children Hailey, 8, Ainsley, 5, and Dalton, 2.
