2009 40 Under 40 Honoree: Brent Singleton

Posted online
Expecting more of himself than he asks of others is Brent Singleton's approach to leadership.

"I have tried to lead by example with my family, in my professional career and through volunteer leadership," says Singleton, partner and financial adviser at Heim, Young & Associates Inc. "A good leader values integrity as the foundation to success, and I have always placed honesty and trust above any other objective."

Singleton's volunteer activities keep him busy. He serves on the boards of directors for Springfield-Branson National Airport and Discovery Center of Springfield; is vice chairman for Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Relations Committee. He also sits on the Springfield Public Schools Foundation Advisory Council. "Having high-quality public education available for generations to come will be essential for the United States to be successful," he says. "As the federal, state and local governments struggle financially, it is necessary to find other sources of funding to keep our schools strong."

Other community efforts include serving on the Drury University Alumni Council and as is a volunteer with Junior Achievement. Singleton also volunteers his services during youth sports seasons.

His proudest professional achievement is a recent one: becoming a partner at Heim, Young & Associates, which he joined in 2004.

"The reason I am both proud and humbled by this milestone is that I was selected for partner by my peers," Singleton says. "Our firm has set high requirements to be considered for partner to include completing difficult professional designations, demonstrating the ability to directly impact firm goals and objectives, being an active member of the community and, most importantly, becoming a respected leader within our organization."

A native of Springfield, Singleton is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and received a master's degree from Drury University.

Before joining Heim, Young & Associates, Singleton was director of medical finance at Los Angeles Air Force Base. He was also director of medical information systems operations at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and director of operations at Precision Stainless Inc., which was acquired by New York-based ITT Corp. during his time there.

Singleton seeks to live the intent of a quote he memorized while at the academy: "There is no limit to the good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit."

He adds, "From working with young children in sports to working with other advisers at my financial firm in their career development, I try to focus on efforts that lead to the success of others."
