As owner of Patterson’s Hospitality Agents LLC, Tiffany Wilgus runs a multimillion dollar company with only one additional employee.
“We are direct factory sales representatives for the hospitality and health care industries,” Wilgus said. “We provide everything inside a hotel guest room (and) a number of nursing home and restaurant furnishings.”
The company, which Wilgus purchased eight years ago, has contracts nationwide and closer to home, including some at Branson Landing.
Wilgus said she got important advice from Dick Patterson, from whom she bought her business.
“I learned several things,” she said. “No. 1: Never be afraid to ask for your money. No. 2: Don’t ever act like you know more than you do. No. 3: Never shoot from the hip. No. 4: If you don’t know the answer, ask, ask, ask.”
Diversification of the business has been a major goal for Wilgus.
“When I first came on board … we had all of our eggs in one basket with one major hotel owner,” she said.
Her strategy, it seems, has paid off.
“I work on a wide range of projects, anything from a Super 8 to a full-service Hyatt,” Wilgus said.
Being her own boss allows Wilgus to prioritize and to spend time with her family – daughters Tricia, 13, Addyson, 7, and Claire, 5.
“There have been a lot of long hours and a lot of sleepless nights. But working for myself affords me the opportunity to be with my children when I am needed, which doesn’t happen that often when you are on someone else’s time clock,” she said.
Wilgus and her daughters are active with Springfield Little Theatre. Last year, Wilgus played the lead role of Grace Bradley in “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” which she said was a rewarding experience.
“I was able to work with a large number of children and adults and build lasting relationships.”
