As the executive director and the only paid staff member of GYN Cancers Alliance, Tammy Mast has a wide array of responsibilities.
Mast oversees everything from communications and public relations to budgeting, fund-raising and volunteer management for the organization, which provides services to gynecologic cancer patients and survivors.
“The greatest joy is when I can say to someone who just doesn’t know where they are going to turn, ‘Let me take care of that,’” she said.
Mast said her primary goals are to continue to grow GYNCA – formerly known as New Hope – and to increase awareness not only of the group, but also of gynecological cancer.
Since the organization was started five years ago, it has grown both in budget and in the number of people it serves.
“We have taken this … from a small volunteer organization that literally passed a hat around to provide pizza for a family to a healthy organization that has ensured that no qualified family has ever been denied assistance in their time of need,” she said.
While much of her volunteer work is connected to her job, Mast also serves as president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, which named her its 2006 Outstanding Fundraising Executive. She’s also involved with Southeast Rotary and is involved with the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce in several ways including as a member of Leadership Springfield Class XXII.
Mast, a Springfield native, said that she and her husband, Tom, also want to share the joy of volunteering with their son, Jacoby, 5.
“When we can, we volunteer with Champion Athletes of the Ozarks, Missouri State University Baseball fund-raising roast, Children’s Charity and Crosslines’ Thanksgiving distribution,” she said.
