2007 40 Under 40 Honoree: Lori Johnson

Posted online
Lori Johnson’s work as marketing director affects all five locations of TelComm Credit Union, including oversight of Web site development and maintenance, business development, staff training, public relations and advertising.

She is dedicated to the credit union concept and hopes to eventually become TelComm’s vice president of marketing.

“I truly believe credit unions are an unknown and/or misunderstood sector in the financial world, and once people learn how we can help them, TelComm sells itself,” she said.

Johnson said her father taught her the importance of working hard and giving back to the community.

“My dad, Rex Johnson, is my No. 1 business mentor, and over the years, he has given me numerous tips,” she said. “The one piece of advice which stands out in my mind is that there are a number of people in business who put forth an average effort and get average results. A little extra effort brings huge returns professionally and personally in the long run.”

Johnson said she was raised in a family that was “exceptionally civic-minded,” and she learned the importance of giving back to the community at a young age. She is in the midst of a two-year term in the elected position of civic responsibility officer for the Springfield Chapter of Credit Unions.

She recently began teaching classes with Consumer Credit Counseling Service at area high schools and helped to coordinate the 10th annual Golfing for Kids tournament, the largest fundraiser event for the Springfield Chapter of Credit Unions.

Johnson, who is a member of Leadership Springfield Class XXII, also is involved with developing and mentoring future communication professionals through Association for Women in Communications, which named her its 2006–07 Member of the Year.
