In his personal life, Gregory Holman is a writer. He is working on a novel, taking part in writers’ groups, keeping a blog, trying to figure out the Internet’s pay-per-click ad model and doing a lot of things writers do as they quietly perfect their craft.
He uses his skills in his day job, too, as the editor of 417 Magazine and handling editorial duties that touch on six other magazines and two Web sites for Whitaker Publishing LLC.
“We’ve had some awards for writing and design in 417 Magazine, but I’m also very proud of helping launch Go Magazine and Wichita magazine,” Holman said. “It’s been very satisfying to midwife something new that makes a dynamic impact and helps a community awaken to more of its own promise.”
Among his current professional goals, Holman is improving Whitaker Publishing’s Web sites.
“We’re doing that by diversifying our content and drawing in readers for new forms of journalism,” Holman said.
He has taken his professional cue from management, particularly Publisher Gary Whitaker.
“Every staffer’s ideas are sought out, respected and made part of a vigorous debate about where to lead the company,” Holman said. “It’s not just open-book management; it’s an open-source approach to ideas. I think that’s critical to making a creative product like ours. I’ve worked for a large media company where secrecy and top-down management was the (mode of operation) and the difference is like night and day.”
In addition to supporting nonprofit work through the magazines he edits, Holman is the board president of the Writers Hall of Fame. He enjoys helping young student writers by giving them scholarships and connecting them locally with nationally known writers.
Holman is unmarried and has six siblings in Branson and St. Louis.
