Two suspects were killed after they opened fire Sunday in a parking lot outside a provocative contest for cartoon depictions of the prophet Muhammad in Garland, Texas, authorities say.
Near the end of the Muhammad Art Exhibit event at the city's Curtis Culwell Center, two men drove up in a car and began shooting at a security officer. The security officer was shot in the lower leg but survived the attack, according to USA Today.
"Garland police officers engaged the gunmen, who were both shot and killed," a city statement said.
The Dallas Morning News reports one of the suspects has been identified as Elton Simpson, an Arizona man who was previously the subject of a terrorism investigation.
According to
Fox News, ISIS-linked Twitter accounts have claimed responsibility for the shooting.
