A ceremonial ground breaking Aug. 2 kicked off an intersection improvement project at Kearney Street and LeCompte Avenue in northeast Springfield.
Project improvements include widening the street, intersection capacity improvements, a storm water management system, traffic signals, curbs and gutters, sidewalks and geometric enhancements, according to a city of Springfield news release.
Intersection improvements are aimed at enhancing motorist safety while reducing delays along this transportation corridor. When completed, this project will provide geometric improvements needed for the efficient movement of goods from existing businesses along LeCompte Avenue and in Partnership Industrial Center to the east, the release stated.
This $1.4 million project is funded through a cooperative cost-sharing agreement between Springfield Underground, the Missouri Department of Transportation and the city of Springfield.
The city's share is funded through the developer/grant matching funds for capital improvements through the l/8-cent sales tax fund. Springfield Underground Inc. is contributing more than $500,000 for the project, as well as donating the right of way on the southwest corner. City Utilities is assisting with upgrades to the electrical system.
The project was designed by Hood-Rich Architects and Engineers, Missouri Department of Transportation and city of Springfield Public Works Traffic Engineering. Hartman & Company Inc. is general contractor.
"This important infrastructure investment will benefit existing businesses while encouraging economic development and business expansion in northeast Springfield," said Marc Thornsberry, Springfield Public Works director. "Springfield Underground is to be commended for its cooperation and financial support of this significant transportation project."
