Shahad Sadeq has worked in her career to promote mentorship, professional development and immigrant success in the architecture industry.

Sadeq, who is originally from Iraq and grew up in the United Arab Emirates, in recent years returned to the local community after stints at architecture firms in Kansas City and Dallas following her graduation from Drury University with her Master of Architecture degree. She’s already making an impact as president of the Springfield chapter of American Institute of Architects.

“My journey as a leader in the architecture profession has been marked by a commitment to mentorship, advocating for emerging professionals and immigrant architects, and a focus on holistic and sustainable human development within the workplace,” Sadeq says. “My journey as a leader in the architecture, engineering and construction profession has been one of continuous growth, advocacy and empowerment.

“I strive to maximize the human potential within workplace culture and beyond.”

Sadeq has spoken at AIA national events and schools nationwide to provide insights into the challenges faced by immigrant architects and advocating for their inclusion.

Collaborating with 25 immigrant designers, Sadeq worked to author the book “City Shapers,” which celebrates the contributions and experiences of immigrant designers.

“Furthermore, as part of an esteemed group of internationally recognized panelists, I am guiding a workshop that advocates and informs about best practices for the design and program development of behavioral health clinics and centers. Our aim is to foster a positive impact on health care spaces and services,” she says.

Her empowerment work doesn’t stop there.

Sadeq has given talks centered on “How to Prosper as an Immigrant Architect in the U.S.,” and she’s developed and conducted leadership workshops titled “How to Lead People Smarter Than You.” Sadeq is a co-founder and member of the Immigrant Architect Coalition.

“Beyond my immediate career, I remain deeply dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the lives and careers of individuals within the architecture profession and the community at large. Through my leadership roles, workshops, mentorship efforts and advocacy, I am committed to fostering growth, diversity and prosperity for all,” Sadeq says.

Her civic work includes volunteer time with The Connecting Grounds, a church dedicated to homeless outreach, and Redeemer Church. She’s also involved with the Urban Land Institute Southwest Missouri chapter, and she’s active in engaging with international students at Drury.

“As an immigrant myself, I understand the challenges that international students may face when adapting to a new environment. By offering mentorship and support, I aim to create a welcoming and inclusive community where these students can thrive and reach their full potential,” she says.
