An elevator leads to the fourth-floor executive offices, where Magers says “50%-60% of the business happens,” and corner offices feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Base Construction & Management LLC built the HQ on budget under $200 a square foot.

Darren Sorrell, a lending underwriter, works from his stand-up desk, the only one in the office. About half of Legacy Bank’s shareholders are also employees, and the owners have a lengthy time horizon: “I like the long plays,” Magers says. “We’re here for the long haul. This is hopefully a reflection of that.”

Legacy Bank administrative staffers were a bit scattered around the area. The leadership team solved that problem by building a four-story, $8 million headquarters in a can’t-miss spot on East Sunshine Street. The building, with a dark cement fiber and glass exterior, rises above the nearby Highway 65 overpass and its evening-lit sign appears at eye level with those driving by. Preceding the move, the bank tripled in size the past three years to $755 million in assets, President Brett Magers says.
