Through the Springfield Regional Arts Council, 90% of the artwork is locally produced, primarily using close-up photographs of historic bank pieces, such as safes, general ledgers and vault locks. A straightforward, rich color palette correlates with one of the company’s core values: simplicity at work.

Magers and receptionist Angela Hayes walk down the centerpiece staircase on the first floor. An elevator leads to the fourth-floor executive offices, where Magers says “50%-60% of the business happens,” and corner offices feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Base Construction & Management LLC built the HQ on budget under $200 a square foot.

An open-air corner balcony beyond the top-floor boardroom pulls in views of southeast Springfield. The bank has moved in 70 employees to occupy the first, second and fourth floors, and office tenants are on the third. “We still have some runway,” says Magers.

Darren Sorrell, a lending underwriter, works from his stand-up desk, the only one in the office. About half of Legacy Bank’s shareholders are also employees, and the owners have a lengthy time horizon: “I like the long plays,” Magers says. “We’re here for the long haul. This is hopefully a reflection of that.”

Legacy Bank administrative staffers were a bit scattered around the area. The leadership team solved that problem by building a four-story, $8 million headquarters in a can’t-miss spot on East Sunshine Street. The building, with a dark cement fiber and glass exterior, rises above the nearby Highway 65 overpass and its evening-lit sign appears at eye level with those driving by. Preceding the move, the bank tripled in size the past three years to $755 million in assets, President Brett Magers says.
