Two companies win Best in Show at SBJ's Coolest Things

Posted online

Two companies last night were named Best in Show winners at Springfield Business Journal's third-annual Coolest Things Made in the Ozarks event.

Springfield-based L&W Industries LLC and Rogersville-based Point One LLC tied in a live vote at the event, held at the Barley House at Moon Town Crossing. Event attendees were asked to vote on their favorite product out of 16 finalists.

L&W Industries' signal cantilever for the railroad industry and Point One's billet aluminum engine block for drag-racing cars were among participating companies' products highlighted in SBJ's Coolest Things publication released Feb. 12.

"It's part of the critical infrastructure of the rail industry," L&W Industries President Jenny Carr said in an interview at the event. "It prevents collisions. It prevents other potential disasters."

Shannon Strother, director of future technologies at Point One, spoke to the importance of its billet aluminum engine block in the company's Coolest Things profile released last month.

"The teams we support are high-end, high-budget teams and spend millions per year on each car to race in these classes," Strother said. "This directly contributes to our local economy in many ways, and in our case specifically fostering the personal growth and success of the P1 team."

Other awards presented at last night's event are:
• The Voters' Choice Award went to the Classic Pepper Jelly product created by College of the Ozarks students, with polling before the event deciding the winner.
• Grimbeard Leather's Adventure Journal took home the Craftsmanship Award.
• The Impact Award went to Link Electronics Inc.'s Automated Captioning Engine Series.
• Carl Kicklighter of Vital Farms of Missouri LLC was recognized as Plant Manager of the Year.
