Leadership lessons

As a leader it is critical that you don’t rush to solve every problem. Instill critical thinking skills in your team by having them present at least one potential solution to any issues that arise. I find it’s also key to start each day with gratitude. This ritual is an out loud practice for the team each morning. Catch each team member doing something awesome daily and tell them how amazing they are.

One particular struggle has been when a team member isn’t committed to our practice vision. It has been hard to ask the necessary questions to determine commitment levels. Through these struggles, I have learned that “clear is kind” to quote Brené Brown. I now know that it is okay to free up a team member to pursue another career path if they are not committed to my practice vision. My job is to set the vision and be clear with my expectations. A team member’s job is to decide whether they choose to be part of that vision.

 Leadership style

• Determination - Once I set a goal and put it into writing, I work hard to provide my team with a map/plan of how we will achieve these goals.

• Commitment to team development and continuing education - I operate under the team philosophy of train me, trust me and then get out of my way.

• Collaboration - I think team input is so important. My team has often come up with opportunities and solutions that I would have never thought of or considered.

Influences

There are many, but my standouts are the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies which has helped me set a career pathway. They have helped me develop my clinical dental skills to help treat TMD (jaw pain) patients, which is my passion-filled purpose in life.

Blatchford Dental Solutions has helped me further develop my leadership skills and involve our team in building a successful dental practice.

The top three books I would recommend are: “Dare to Lead” by Brene Brown, “The 21 Laws of Irrefutable Leadership” by John C. Maxwell and “The One Thing” by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. While many of these books discuss the same concepts, each writer brings a unique perspective and language to help you focus.

Advice for aspiring leaders

I wish I had known years ago that being a leader is a great privilege and can spark much joy. Early in my career, I almost saw it as a burden but now, knowing that through my leadership, I can help develop people to their full potential and help others lead happy and full lives, it brings me a career satisfaction I never expected.
