2009 Most Influential Women Honoree: Angela Morelock

Posted online
Angela Morelock joined BKD LLP fresh out of college and within four years became its first certified fraud examiner as she built a new forensic accounting practice.

"I provide fraud investigation and prevention, complex litigation support and forensic accounting services for a variety of business clients and have spent the past 15 years developing BKD Forensics & Valuation Services into a $5 million practice," says Morelock, partner and certified forensic accountant with the firm.

She provides consulting and expert witness assistance to attorneys, and her team has investigated some of the largest fraud cases in the United States for a client list that has included the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney's Office.

"It has truly been rewarding to build this new forensic accounting practice for BKD that is of significant assistance to businesses during often difficult times," Morelock says. "I would say my proudest accomplishment is the team I have built, recruited and trained, a very talented group of forensic accounting professionals that I have the privilege to lead and work with on a daily basis."

Morelock graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in accounting from Missouri State University. In addition to being a certified fraud examiner and certified forensic accountant, she is certified in financial forensics.

As a certified public accountant, Morelock takes more than 60 hours of continuing education each year, and she regularly shares her knowledge and experience with other professionals in her field.

"I am frequently a lecturer at national conferences and other business group meetings," Morelock says, noting that her educational seminars on white-collar crime are often presented free of charge. "Last year alone, I made nearly 100 public presentations in addition to work on cases and clients."

Morelock is a recognized leader in her field and consults with colleagues in more than 30 BKD offices in 12 states.

"I work to help audiences learn about red flags that should tip them off should similar activities occur in their own company," she says. "I have provided warnings and advice that has sent many a CEO to the front of the room at the end of a presentation to put a business card into my hand (with) a request to call them."

Morelock also holds the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' Accredited in Business Valuation designation.

Her civic involvement has included serving on the board of directors of the American Diabetes Association, where she managed accounting for the annual fundraiser.

She also spent four years on the board of directors of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Springfield and served as its president for two years. In those roles, Morelock helped coordinate Clothesline, a program with Springfield Victory Mission and Kiwanis that helps students in critical need of clothing.
