TownePlace Suites opens for business

Springfield's first TownePlace Suites by Marriott has opened after a delay.

The $10 million hotel, which had been scheduled to launch early last month, opened to guests Oct. 2, according to a news release. Needed interior work and minor exterior work caused the delay, officials said.

The 110-unit, extended-stay hotel sits kitty-corner to Mercy Hospital Springfield at 2009 S. National Ave. It is designed to accommodate longer staying guests, with units that include kitchens and separate living/working spaces.

With a groundbreaking by Larry Snyder & Co. in March 2013, the five-story property was designed by architecture firm Baron Design & Associates LLC to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-Silver standards.

Owned by RTT Hospitality LLC and managed by O'Reilly Hospitality Management LLC, the the 70,000-square-foot hotel represents a partnership between Rita Baron of architecture firm Baron Design, Terry Reynolds of C. Arch Bay Co. and Tim O’Reilly of O’Reilly Hospitality.

The TownePlace Suites enters a local lodging industry experiencing upward trends this year. Through June, according to the most recent Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau data, the hotel industry in Springfield brought in $44.7 million, a 6.3 percent increase compared to the same six-month period a year earlier. Year-to-date room occupancy increased to 59.9 percent, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

O'Reilly Hospitality also announced plans in 2012 to build a Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott adjacent to the Mercy Orthopedic Hospital at U.S. Highway 65 and Evans Road.

On the east side, work is underway on developer Earl Steinert's $7 million, more than 65,000-square-foot Hampton Inn at 3370 E. Montclair St.[[In-content Ad]]
