Hurts Donut inks south-side lease

Posted online
Hurts Donut Co. is coming to the south side, filling up a 1,600-square-foot retail space in the Gallery Eleven shopping center at the northwest corner of National Avenue and Republic Road.

Anita Zimmerman of Wilhoit Properties Inc. confirmed this morning the Springfield-based boutique doughnut company signed a long-term lease for undisclosed terms at the former Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes.

Wilhoit Properties’ listing marketed the property for lease at $2,600 a month, or $19.50 per square foot.

“We’re very excited. We’ve been trying to get them down here for a few months,” Zimmerman said of the doughnut makers.

The lease agreement makes the Gallery Eleven center – owned by Gallery Eleven LLC via John Haik, owner of outdoor retail store Ozark Adventures – 100 percent occupied, said Zimmerman.

Kas Clegg, co-owner of Hurts Donut, said the five-year lease was signed yesterday, and the company hopes to be open within 60 days.

“We wanted something that was easily accessible from the highway so we could cater to not only our Springfield fans, but our fans in Ozark, Republic and Nixa,” she said.

The company currently has three locations – one each in Springfield, Norman, Okla., and Wichita, Kan. – and Clegg said an Iowa City, Iowa, store should open in 30 to 40 days. She said franchise stores in Oklahoma, Texas and Florida also are being considered.

On June 26, the company moved to its new downtown location at 320 Park Central West from 301 Park Central West.

According to Zimmerman, the former Dagwood’s site had been listed for 60 to 90 days. Springfield Business Journal reported in May Dagwood’s was scheduled to close its doors May 29.
