Kum & Go unveils Springfield-inspired sculpture at new store

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go LC today unveiled its first Springfield-inspired sculpture at its newest store in the Queen City.

The ampersand sculpture sits outside the 3434 W. Chestnut Expressway store and features landmarks and defining characteristics of the city, including Route 66 imagery such as the Red’s Giant Hamburg sign and the Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven motel, local high schools, Springfield-style cashew chicken, the nature center and Gillioz Theatre.

Kum & Go spokeswoman Kristie Bell said the sculpture is the first in Springfield. The chain’s first Ozark store, which opened in February, features a similar ampersand sculpture with imagery showing the city’s high school and city hall, as well as its access to U.S. Highway 65, according to Christian County Headliner News.

Bell could not be reached for further details about the ampersand, which represents the typographical character in Kum & Go’s name.

The newest Springfield store at the corner of Chestnut Expressway and West Bypass launched this morning, three weeks after the company’s second Marketplace concept store at 1211 W. Sunshine St. in Springfield opened. Features of the concept include indoor and outdoor seating, an open kitchen layout, device charging stations and complimentary Wi-Fi.

The 6,200-square-foot store at the site of the former Cliff’s Auto Sales replaces a kitty-corner location at 425 N. West Bypass. The Marketplace stores typically exceed $4 million in development costs, though a city building permit put the estimated cost for this store at $1.67 million.

The new Springfield and Ozark stores are part of Kum & Go’s $30.5 million in planned investments in the Springfield-area market.

In the Springfield area, Kum & Go operates 46 stores, the large majority of the 70 stores in Missouri, according to a news release.
