A week after allegations of cheating, fantasy sports companies DraftKings and FanDuel posted a record number of entries and entry fees.
According to United Kingdom-based industry research firm SuperLobby, the top two sites received a combined 7.1 million entries and generated $43.6 million in entry fees. The performance of real-life players determines the outcome of fantasy teams drafted on the websites.
The glut of entries into the two companies’ multiplayer prize pool tournaments – spurred by Sunday’s NFL games – follows a New York Times report Oct. 5 stating a DraftKings employee was winning hundreds of thousands of dollars on the rival site.
Although no evidence was found that proprietary information led to the profits, both companies have reassured customers against claims of government investigations and a class-action lawsuit, according to Bloomberg Business.
