WGU Puts Working Missourians on Fast Track to Earning In-Demand Degrees

Posted online

WGU Missouri is leading the charge in making affordable, quality education available to Missouri residents who have some college experience but no degree and are busy raising families and working full time. Celebrating its 5th anniversary this year, the university was created in 2013 by Governor Jay Nixon as a state affiliate of Western Governors University and is the only state-endorsed, accredited, nonprofit, online university in Missouri. It offers more than 50 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the areas of business, education, IT and health care.

WGU’s competency-based model allows students to earn credits based on their knowledge and real-world experience instead of time spent in the classroom, so they can move quickly through material they already know and focus on what they still need to learn. The self-paced approach, coupled with flat-rate tuition of about $6,000 a year, allows students to take as many courses as possible in that time frame, resulting in a quality education for less time and money.

The school, which cites an average student age of 36, currently has 2,643 students enrolled, an increase of more than 15 percent over last year. Since its establishment five years ago, WGU Missouri has conferred 1,858 degrees, 50 percent of them in the past 12 months. These grads are seeing a difference in their lives as doors open to more career opportunities. In fact, many are earning an average of $10,600 more within a year or two of graduation.

WGU provides tuition discounts to employees of its many partners around the state and has awarded over $1 million in WGU-funded scholarships since 2013.
