San Francisco becomes highest-income big US metro area

San Francisco edged out Washington, D.C., last year as the highest-earning large U.S. metropolitan area.

The San Francisco metro area's median household income last year was $96,667. That's ahead of the $95,843 figure for the nation's capital.

The median income for the San Francisco area rose by 9.2 percent last year.
