Salvation Army installs new local leaders

The Salvation Army has two new local leaders in place.

Majs. Amos and Cyndi Shiels, veterans of the nonprofit, started in their new roles July 5, according to a news release.

"Majs. Shiels are looking forward to serving the Springfield community," officials said in the release. "All of their family are involved in various Salvation Army ministries."

The Shiels, a married couple, have been co-pastors and co-administrators with The Salvation Army since 2001. They most recently led the nonprofit's chapter in Holland, Michigan.

The Shiels succeed Majs. Jon and Kris Augenstein, who retired from the nonprofit last month after leading the local chapter since 2020, according to past reporting.

The Springfield chapter of The Salvation Army ranked No. 19 in Springfield Business Journal's list this year of the area's largest charitable nonprofits. The faith-based relief agency reported a $3 million operating budget, 45 employees and 725 local volunteers for the list published Feb. 6.
