McDonald’s and Tyson Foods Inc. have teamed to make a 40,000-pound donation of protein to Ozarks Food Harvest Inc. to help battle hunger across southwest Missouri.

The donation of chicken breast filet fritters was made by Tyson Foods in conjunction with McDonald’s $15,000 contribution to Ozarks Food Harvest’s recent Hungerthon fundraiser, according to a news release. The food is expected to provide more than 33,000 meals through the nonprofit’s network of 270 hunger-relief organizations.

“McDonald’s and Tyson continue to be fantastic partners and are helping feed so many children, families and seniors facing hunger in the Ozarks,” said Bart Brown, Ozarks Food Harvest president and CEO, in the release. “We’re so grateful for this generous donation of protein and funds that will help folks struggling with increased grocery prices.”

Protein-rich foods are one of the most-requested items from Ozarks Food Harvest’s network of faith-based and community charities. In the nonprofit’s service area, 1 in 7 children and adults face hunger, officials say.

“Local McDonald’s owners, operators and their families across the greater Springfield area were excited to partner with Tyson for the 14th year to help supply needed nourishment to Ozarks Food Harvest,” said Ryan Blumenstock, a McDonald’s local owner and operator, in the release.

The donation from McDonald’s was part of nearly $253,000 raised last month for the 25th annual Hungerthon, a radio fundraiser held in partnership with iHeartRadio Springfield, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

McDonald’s and Tyson Foods have supported Ozarks Food Harvest since 2008, according to the release. Over the past 15 years, McDonald’s has hosted fundraisers to help provide more than 340,000 meals, while Tyson has donated over 600,000 pounds of chicken.

The nonprofit recently announced it distributed 20.18 million meals in fiscal 2023, which ended June 30. That’s up slightly from the 20.16 million meals in the prior fiscal year, according to past reporting.
