Tackling her first venture in the retail business world, Cheryl Mitchell started Suddenlies Gallery & Boutique May 1 at 315 South Ave. She sells new and upscale resale women’s clothing and apparel, along with handcrafted jewelry, paintings, photography and other local art. Mitchell said prices start at $10, with much of the casual clothing available for under $100. She leases the 4,000-square-foot store from Scott and Paul Tillman of Tillman Redevelopment LLC. The space was vacant for four years, Mitchell said, and was once home to Susan Sommer-Luarca’s art gallery. Terms of the lease and startup costs were undisclosed. Mitchell, who is currently the lone employee, said she wants the business to be a spot where people can be inspired and learn to express their creativity. “It can be an incubator or launching point to people who want to start their own business but maybe can’t afford a storefront,” she said, adding she’ll negotiate subleases to vendors.

Crave Cookie Dough LLC
Dessert is on the menu at Crave Cookie Dough LLC, which opened for business May 11. Co-owned by Maggie West, Dylan Collins and two silent partners, the shop at 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 102, offers safe-to-eat cookie dough featuring eight permanent and two rotating flavors, along with vegan and gluten-free options. Dessert sandwiches, milkshakes and dough pops, as well as puppy dough for canines, also are served. Ten employees staff Crave, which filled 1,800 square feet previously occupied by The Urban Cup. West said she and Collins, who worked together at Maria’s Mexican Restaurant, collaborated on starting Crave over a year ago with the intent of bringing a new concept downtown. The business is financed by a $130,000 U.S. Small Business Administration loan, as well as a 20 percent investment from Collins and investors, according to Springfield Business Journal archives. A three-year lease was signed for undisclosed terms with landlord Craig Wagoner.

The Seymour Bank
A third branch of The Seymour Bank opened May 21 on the Marshfield square at 101 W. Jefferson St. President Kirk Penner said a nearly $500,000 remodel converted the 2,500-square-foot space from its former use by Bear State Bank, which moved its Marshfield branch in 2017 to Spur Drive. Penner said new furnishings, floorings and wall coverings, along with added office space and drive-thru improvements, were made. The bank leases a portion of the building for undisclosed terms from the city of Marshfield, which purchased the structure in 2017 with the intent of eventually moving City Hall operations there. The full-service branch, which offers checking, savings, loans, CDs and ATM access, employs five. Seymour Bank also operates a branch each in Seymour and Rogersville. As of March 31, bank assets were nearly $133.7 million, deposits were $110.6 million and loans were $88.2 million.
