Charity Evans opened a retail storefront and studio Jan. 28 at 219 E. Commercial St. Operating as Gabriel Design Co. LLC, the move comes a year after starting her business in a one-bedroom apartment in Springfield and almost two years working for Marc-Michaels Interior Design in Orlando, Florida. With $35,000 in startup costs, Evans said the 2,400-square-foot store specializes in lighting, furniture, throw pillows and rugs. Evans, a Missouri State University interior design graduate, said rugs and throw pillows are priced $70 to $120 and lighting ranges from $400 to $3,000. Gabriel Design Co. is in a one-year lease with landlord Sean McKay.

Smoothie King
Smoothie King is back in Springfield after several years removed from the market.
Rob Edwards, who also owns a Smoothie King in St. Louis, saw an opportunity and decided to return the franchise to his hometown. He opened a store Dec. 2 at 4406 S. Campbell Ave., after signing a five-year lease for undisclosed terms. Edwards signed a three-store, three-year deal with the Louisiana-based franchisor, which has over 600 Smoothie King locations. He declined to disclose the investment, but franchisees typically spend $188,000-$414,000 per store, according to SmoothieKingFranchise.com. Using the slogan “Smoothies with a Purpose,” the store blends health-centered products, such as its Gladiator line with 45 grams of protein in a 20-ounce serving.

Brent Sturgeon opened the store Nov. 4 on 650 E. Battlefield Road with three other full-time employees. With inventory including clothing, food, toys, watches, home goods and tools, Tendai, a marketing entrepreneur by trade, said products are new items, overstock and customer returns, as well as seasonal items and slightly damaged merchandise at a discount. Costco is one of the suppliers, so many goods are from Kirkland Signature. He said other products sold are cosmetics by Chanel and Estee Lauder, furniture by Universal Leather, and craft beer and wines by Poizin and The Stump Jump. Tendai and Sturgeon signed a three-year lease for 5,000 square feet with the Sparks Family Trust.
