 Experience was top of mind in the design, Olson says. She wants to replace the anxiety of going to the dentist with peace of mind through airy spaces. Employees work off large monitors and stark white desks. Olson says white surfaces take effort to look nice, “but that subconscious feeling that the patient gets from the white, it feels clean and light.”

Dexter, the Olsons’ dog, has been an office staple for seven years and patients often ask for him to visit them. He roams the hallway of administrative offices on the second floor, which overlooks Highway 65. Olson says her husband noticed the land for sale several years ago and thought the visibility from the highway and development opportunities in this corridor made it a prime location. The building was completed in November 2020.

Olson says her husband’s second love is grilling and smoking meat. Spending so much time in the office, she says they wanted to incorporate some of the comforts of home. The second-floor covered patio is used for educational events and a weekly happy hour for staff.

Plenty of seating was key in the break room, Olson says. The team kicks off the week with an all-staff meeting, and catered lunch is brought in daily as an employee perk. Of course, lots of windows were essential to keep the outdoors in focus.

Though technically Dr. Olson’s office, he isn’t in it much – he feels strongly that dentists shouldn’t spend time sitting in their office but should be among staff. They now call the room the creative office. However, he does use the space pre- and post-work, starting the day with the en suite shower and ending it with a glass of whiskey or tequila.

Modern, sleek and calm. Those were the marching orders for Innovative Dental’s new office in south Springfield, right off U.S. Highway 65. Lauren Olson, co-owner and operations manager, says the 30,000-square-foot dentist office was designed like a spa. Crisp white walls, neutral flooring and fixtures, and loads of glass bring the outdoors in. “We wanted our team members to have a place where they really enjoyed coming to work every day,” Olson says. The 50-employee practice led by her husband, Dr. Grant Olson, also was designed to be durable and easy to clean as the team has roughly 15,000 patients.
