Michael Bloomberg announced he donated $1.8 billion to Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater.
The funding is earmarked for student financial aid, including for loans already taken out by current Hopkins students and alumni.
The donation is said to be the largest private gift to higher education in modern American times.
