Carl Icahn's Icahn Enterprises disclosed a federal investigation.
The U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of New York reportedly contacted the company seeking information about corporate governance, capitalization, securities offerings and other data.
The move came shortly after short seller Hindenburg Research alleged "inflated" asset valuations in taking a short position against Icahn's company.
