An Oak Brook, Illinois, real estate development firm purchased the former Heritage Cafeteria building at 1364 E. Battlefield Road.
Brokers Scott and Zachary Harrell of Scott F. Harrell & Associates Inc. represented property owner Don Evans in the sale that closed Oct. 24. Scott Harrell said InSite Real Estate bought the 1.75-acre property for undisclosed terms. The asking price was $2.2 million, he said.
Harrell referred questions about future plans to Scott Nicholson and Ed Gebauer of InSite Real Estate. They could not be reached for comment by deadline.
“Their plans are for redevelopment,” Harrell said. “It’s a great corner. It hadn’t been on the market for over 35 years. (The owners) had fielded a lot of inquiries on selling that property over the years because of its high-profile location.
“I’m sure what opens there will be a nice addition to Springfield.”
Heritage Cafeteria, a restaurant known for its home-style cooking, closed Aug. 21 due to higher costs, changing economic times, an opportunity for the owners to retire and a property purchase offer.
The restaurant originally opened at 1310 S. Glenstone Ave. in October 1960 and reached a peak of four locations during the 1980s. The partnership dissolved a decade later. A restaurant at North Town Mall already had closed by that time, and two others that were renamed to Mrs. O’Mealey’s closed in 1998 and 2002, according to
