Google is splitting AI into its own business unit

John Giannandrea is stepping down after two years leading Google’s search and artificial intelligence units, and his role is getting split between two executives.

 

Google confirmed Jeff Dean, the cofounder of Google Brain in the AI research division, will lead all of its AI efforts. Ben Gomes, who ran search engineering, will take over the search organization.

 

The moves, first reported by technology news site The Information, suggest that AI is now important enough to form its own business unit.
