First openly gay governor in US history elected

Jared Polis, the Democratic candidate for Colorado governor’s race, became the first openly gay person to be elected to that office in U.S. history.

Polis, a U.S. congressman who represents Boulder, defeated Republican treasurer Walker Stapleton.

According to Quartz, former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey is openly gay, but he came out after being elected.
