Facebook steps up political ad transparency

Facebook Inc. announced the social media service started requiring political advertisers to verify their identities and locations, a move meant to help deter foreign interference in elections.

A proposed U.S. Senate Bill, meanwhile, would require the disclosures. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to appear before Congress on April 10 and 11, testifying on the company’s use of consumer data.

Facebook also is set to begin verifying the identities and locations of entities who run large Facebook pages, among other steps to bolster social media transparency.
