Facebook breach affected 30M users, fewer than first believed

Posted online

Facebook announced Friday that an attack on the social media company’s computer systems affected 30 million users. That’s about 20 million fewer than earlier estimates.

It appears to be a positive development for Facebook as it continues to investigate what was probably the most substantial breaching of its network in the company’s 14-year history.

However, the personal information that was exposed was far more intimate than what was originally thought, according to The New York Times.

Of the 30 million users affected, about 14 million had detailed information from their Facebook profiles stolen, including items as specific as the last 15 people or things they had searched for on Facebook, as well as the last 10 locations they had checked into on the network.
