Posted online
CoxHealth impacted the community to the tune of $566.37 million during fiscal 2011, which ended Sept. 30, according to its latest community impact report released today.

The report branches into two categories - economic impact and community benefit.

CoxHealth's economic impact included:
  • $423.8 million in payroll and benefits;
  • nearly $19 million in capital investments, such as purchasing and leasing medical equipment and technology, as well as rental facilities; and
  • $1.03 million in real estate and property taxes.
The hospital's community benefits included:
  • $118.5 million in estimated unpaid costs of providing care to Medicare and Medicaid patients, representing the difference between the cost of care and payments received by the government and covered patients;
  • $2.8 million in foundation grants, financial contributions and in-kind donations;
  • $837,254 in community outreach services; and
  • $300,759 in health education and research.
"Our community impact report is evidence of our constant striving to care for all patients, including the most vulnerable in our community," CoxHealth President and CEO Steve Edwards said in a news release. "As Springfield’s only locally governed, not-for-profit health care system, we strive to make every decision in the context of first, what is right for our patients, and then, what is right for the Ozarks."
